Treo 650 and podcasting

Filed under: General — russell @ 9:26 am

With my recent purchase of my treo 650 (good bye pocket pc pda AND windows smartphone with no keyboard)... I am really getting into always having and MP3 player with me (did I mention the battery life is GREAT!??!?)... I always have my phone. I have now hooked my treo up to my car stereo using a cassette adapter. It is working great: over 1000 songs on a SD card -- can you say click click shuffle?

Anyway, I love having that much music always with me, and the music keeps going even when i get out of the car (think personal theme music). Enough ranting. This morning I was looking at podcasts again, and really beginning to feel it. That technology is maturing quickly and I think I will trying to listen a little more: http://audio.weblogs.com/

Treo 650

Filed under: General — russell @ 9:29 am

I just bought a treo 650 and hacked it to work on verizon's network. It is hot. I am using thier 1xRTT network (free nights and weekends) and I could not ask for a better phone. This phone is SICK!

Over the weekend while out riding in the car (not driving) I was sending IMs, writing an e-mail and working on a simple word document (via terminal services) all from the Treo. Crazy! I have loaded my SD card with about 100 MP3s and use it as an MP3 player. This week I bought an adpater so I can use a cassette adapter in my cars tape player. You can see the adapter here:

Basically have a sweet hands free phone and MP3 player for my car -- the battery life is way long enough. I am really feeling this phone.

Article on whitespace

Filed under: General — russell @ 5:43 pm

An interesting read on the use of whitespace. As I am doing much more writing these days it made me think, whitespace can be very effective even in technical papers.

anyway.... heres the article:

Hmmmm played with a web based sms interface today

Filed under: General — russell @ 5:26 pm

Found some interesting web-based interfaces for SMS. Nice, hunh? Seriously began to wonder: how long before I had to start paying for spammers to text me? I already get telemarketers calling my cell phone, whoooo hooooo... I have to pay for people to try and sell me stuff (ie my minutes etc.). Soon I will be paying for text messages for spam too... I thought about exactly how hard it would be to write a script to send mass text messages... ummm can you say I already have that code (post to a web form)?

Data Mining

Filed under: General — russell @ 9:14 am

As I try to work thorugh my dissertaion research I have discovered that there are relatively few data mining applications (besides things like WEKA), that you can get without spending alot of money. As I am wandering around this morning I will put some of the things I find here.

Blog Spam — Arrrggg

Filed under: General — russell @ 10:48 am

Following up on my ealier post on blog spamming -- it seems I am not the only one who noticed. PhotoMatt has a nice rant on it here: http://photomatt.net/2005/01/05/trackback-spam/

For now I have turned off commenting and trackback :(

No much to say

Filed under: General — russell @ 4:46 pm

I really do not have much to say today, but I was cleaning up the spam comments and thought I would post. Since I am talking about spam comments -- yes spam comments:

New (relatively) thing it seems. Spammers like online casinos and credit cards look for sites or blogs (like this one) where posting comments are allowed and they post a comment advertising thier site. Pretty annoying -- worse than email spam becuause the filters for this medium are not as mature nor are the interfaces here as nice as the e-mail interfaces. I can only imagine what it is like for a big site that actually has lots and lots of visitors and visibility. I am sure the spammers have figured out how to use google and the like to find wordpress or other sites/software that allow comments.

Web Site color schemes

Filed under: General — russell @ 8:06 am

Welcome to 2005!

Anyway... I just cant ever seem to get away from doing web sites... uggggg!!! I hate them. Such a necessary evil these days. In addition to my blog site, and of course my personal web site, I am starting a new company: Agility Data Research. As a result, guess what?

Yup. Need a web site. So the search began for a good CMS (went with Ez Publish 3.0 -- It was free, I knew how to use it from 2.0 and it is powerful enough to deliver the features I needed). Next a logo, color schemes, layout, and the ever demanding... content. I could just sling up a frontpage site -- but that is just not me, hmmmm....

Maybe the issue is not web sites... maybe its me. Anyway I found a nice site with some color schemes http://www.returnofdesign.com/spectacle/specials/colors.html
